The Great British Snoring Survey

The Great British Snoring Survey was conducted amongst 2,026 adults in May and June 2006. The survey aimed to unearth the true effects that snoring has on the British public in areas of life such as sex, relationships, wellbeing and work.

Who snores?

  • Over half of people (56%) admit that they snore
  • In gender terms, 7/10 men and 4/10 women admitted to snoring
  • 30% of people stated that their partner snores
  • 13% of respondents said their father snores
  • 7% of people’s mothers were known to snore
  • 3 dogs and 1 cat were also mentioned to be snorers!

How does snoring affect people’s lives?

  • Nearly half of people (48%) said that snoring had affected their personal relationships (45% of men and 50% of women)
  • Of those, 46% of people admitted to sleeping in separate bedrooms due to snoring (46% of men and 51% of women)
  • Of those affected;
    • 47% found that snoring had caused them to be irritable
    • 36% stated that snoring had led to arguments
    • 17% had experienced problems with closeness and sexual relations because of snoring
  • In 2 cases people even said that snoring had caused them to divorce
  • Almost three quarters (72%) of respondents have experienced a bad night’s sleep due to snoring (81% of women and 64% men)
  • Over a third of respondents (38%) claimed that snoring has had some effect on their ability to work or perform normal daily tasks, on an average of 4 days per week
  • Of those considerably affected 9% had taken some time off work in the past month (an average time of 9 hours)
